The Carpenters - Short Biography

The Carpenters, an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter, were known for their distinctive, smooth musical style. During their 14-year career, they released 10 albums, numerous singles and several television specials. Karen sang contralto and Richard arranged and composed the music, until Karen's death in 1983.

The song uses the card game as a metaphor for a man who has lost his love through indifference and, while life goes on around him, is left alone to play solitaire. The song was made popular by the Carpenters and another version by Andy Williams reached number four on the UK singles chart in 1973.
