The song tells the story of a young girl who falls in love with a preacher, but is unfortunately forced to leave him. The lyrics suggest that the girl had a child with the preacher, but it is not known if this is true or not. The song became a hit in Britain and the United States, reaching number 18 in the UK and number 9 in the US.
