The song "Stand by Me" was written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1961. It was popularized by the Rob Reiner movie in 1986, but it was already known thanks to the original version by Ben E. King, released in 1961.

"Stand by Me" was written in the style of gospel music, but it was also inspired by rhythm and blues music. The song is about friendship and loyalty, two important themes in gospel music. Ben E. King said that the song was inspired by a passage in the Bible, the Book of Kings, where it says that "the Lord is my shepherd, I shall never want.
