The album was produced by Usher's longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, as well as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Lil Jon, among others. During the recording sessions from 2003 to 2004, the album's themes caused some controversy about Usher's personal relationships. However, the album's lead producer, Jermaine Dupri, claimed that the album reflected his own personal story.
