Vocalist and guitarist Slash composed the music for "Sweet Child O' Mine" in one session, while the rest of the band was taking a break. He had originally written the melody for a ballad, but after hearing Steven Adler's drums, he decided to turn it into a faster song. Bassist Duff McKagan then added a bass line and pianist Dizzy Reed played keyboard notes on the chorus.

The song was written collaboratively by guitarist Slash and vocalist Axl Rose. Slash composed the music for the song, while Rose wrote the lyrics. Rose's lyrics were inspired by his then-girlfriend, Erin Everly, daughter of Everly Brothers singer Don Everly.

The song was recorded in March 1987 and released as a single in June of that year. The single became the group's first and biggest commercial hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song remained at the top of the chart for three weeks.
