Berlin - Short Biography

- Irving Berlin was a Russian-American composer, songwriter and lyricist.
- His music forms a large part of the Great American Songbook.
- He published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy," in 1907.
- He had his first major international hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band," in 1911.
- He also owned the Music Box Theatre on Broadway.
- Berlin wrote hundreds of songs, many of which became major hits, that made him famous before he was thirty.
- During his 60-year career, he wrote about 1,500 songs, including scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films.
- His songs have topped the charts in 25 countries.

- "Take My Breath Away" is a song from the movie Top Gun composed by Giorgio Moroder (music) and written by Tom Whitlock (lyrics), performed by the band Berlin.
- It is featured on the Top Gun movie soundtrack album and on Berlin's 1986 album Count Three and Pray.
- The song debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1986, and won the Oscar for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1987.
- The video shows the band's singer, Terri Nunn, dressed in a blue dress, walking at night, between plane wrecks in a junkyard, followed by two men, and interspersed with clips from the movie.
- Gérard Lenorman adapted it into French under the title "Le bleu des regrets" in 1986.
- Jessica Simpson covered it in 2004.
- Sandy Lam covered it in Mandarin for the film As Tears Go By.
- Naya Rivera and Dianna Agron covered it in an episode of the TV series Glee.
- Jessica Simpson's version is the third single from her third album In This Skin, released on March 7, 2004. The song is composed by Billy Mann.
