In 1983, George Jones recorded the song for his album Shine On. Jones' producer, Billy Sherrill, did not want him to record the song because he thought it was too country for Jones. Sherrill eventually relented and the song became one of Jones' big hits. It was included on Shine On and released as a single in December 1983. The single reached number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in early 1984, becoming Jones' highest charting single in five years.
