The song is about the protagonist explaining the characteristics of a creature called a Snark. The Snark has a taste that is faint but crispy, it wakes up very late in the day and eats breakfast at tea time, it doesn't understand jokes and always looks serious, it carries around bathing-machines and believes it adds beauty to things, and it has different types based on whether it has feathers or whiskers. The protagonist and her partner have never seen a true Snark until now, and the Baker gets scared and faints when the Bellman mentions some Snarks called Boojums that can cause harm.
