This song tells the story of a woman who leaves Providence, Rhode Island, taking her hopes and dreams with her, to travel to the Great Divide in search of a better life. She hears of a place of beauty and love for the land and people gather in crowded bars to party. The landscape changes when rich men come to build ugly boxes and neon signs, while a "Jesus is coming" sign is brought by missionaries. The singer then asks the question of who will provide the grand design, and what is ours and what is mine. He then concludes that although there is no longer a new frontier, we must make this place work and we justify our actions by calling it heaven.
