The Tears of a Clown was written by Smokey Robinson and produced by the band The Miracles. It was originally released as a single in 1967, before being included on the 1968 album Make It Happen. The song became an international hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and Canada.

Smokey Robinson wrote The Tears of a Clown in response to the many criticisms that were leveled at The Miracles about their music and image. Robinson wanted The Miracles to be perceived as a bunch of sad clowns, and he used the song to express that idea. The song is about a clown who is sad and isolated, but still smiles and pretends to be happy for the audience.

The Tears of a Clown was recorded in one take, and Robinson's performance received critical acclaim. The song became an international hit, and has been covered by many artists, including Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson.
