Spandau Ballet, the British new wave band, emerged in London in 1979 as the house band of the Blitz Kids, playing "European dance music." The band was a huge success during the new wave era of British pop, selling 25 million albums and recording 23 hits worldwide. The band's sound was influenced by punk rock, soul music and American crooners Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. It was a unique blend of styles that remains very popular among fans of the genre today.

"To Cut a Long Story Short" is an iconic new wave song by the English band Spandau Ballet. Released on October 31, 1980, it was the band's first single. The band began recording the song before being signed by a record label, following interest in their first gig for patrons of the exclusive weekly London nightclub, The Blitz, and a Christmas party at the same establishment. The band had been experimenting with different genres of music, but decided on dance music to appeal to the younger crowd at The Blitz. They trusted their guitarist/songwriter, Gary Kemp, to come up with a song that would impress the club's top crowd at their first show.
