The Drifters - Short Biography

- The Drifters are an American doo-wop and R&B/soul vocal group.
- The original Drifters group was formed in 1953 as a backing band for Clyde McPhatter.
- The second group, The Five Crowns, was formed in 1959 and led by Ben E. King.
- Members of the group drifted in and out of both groups and formed other Drifters groups.
- Many Drifters groups can trace their roots to the original groups, but contain few or no original members.

The song "Up on the Roof" was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and first published in 1962 by The Drifters. Gerry Goffin was a New York songwriter who worked with his wife Carole King on many occasions. Together they wrote such hits as "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "The Loco-Motion" and "One Fine Day." "Up on the Roof" is a melancholy song about a man who escapes his stressful life by climbing to the roof of his building to relax and gaze at the stars. The song was a commercial success, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and is considered one of the Drifters' best songs.
