Written and produced by Keys herself, alongside Swizz Beatz, Mark Batson and Harold Lilly, the song expresses Keys' frustration with various domestic and international issues, including the Israel-Gaza conflict, the Ebola virus outbreak and problems with education and gun laws in the United States. She made her debut on Keys' Facebook page on September 8, 2014, accompanied by a lyric explaining her motivations and inspirations for the song. A week later, it was released digitally and Keys performed it on the Today show on September 15.
