The protagonist sings about a ship called the Billy of Tea that sets sail to collect sugar, tea and rum. While at sea, they encounter a right whale, which they try to catch. The whale drags the ship along for days while they harpoon and fight it, but eventually, they manage to catch it. The protagonist sings about how they're looking forward to the Wellerman, who will bring them provisions, so they can finish their expedition and return home.
