The song "Whipping Post" is a song of the American rock band The Allman Brothers Band. It was written by guitarist and singer Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley. It was first released on the 1971 album At Fillmore East, and became a hit in 1972.

The song was written in 1969, while the band was on tour. Duane Allman was inspired by an experience he had with the police when he was arrested for possession of marijuana. He had been beaten by the police, and it had been a very traumatic experience for him. Berry Oakley had also been a victim of police violence, and he was very affected by these events. The two musicians used their experiences to write the song, which is a critique of police violence.

The song was recorded in March 1971, during a recording session in New York. The band was preparing their second album, Eat a Peach, and they had decided to include "Whipping Post" on the album. However, when the album was finalized, the band decided not to include it because they thought the song was too long. They finally decided to release the song on the live album At Fillmore East, which was released in July 1971.

The song was a commercial success, and it was covered by many artists, including The Grateful Dead, The Doors and The Rolling Stones.
