- Green Day was formed in 1987 by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and John Kiffmeyer.
- They were originally called Sweet Children and were part of the Bay Area punk scene.
- In 1990, Tré Cool joined the band, replacing John Kiffmeyer.
- In 1994, the band released their first album, Dookie, which has sold over 10 million copies in the United States.
- Green Day is credited with popularizing mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.

Green Day's song Basket Case was written by singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong while he was in rehab after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. The song was released in 1994 as the third single from the album Dookie. The title of the song refers to a briefcase that Armstrong had taken with him to rehab centers, as it had a picture of his girlfriend, which he wanted to keep with him. The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of Green Day's most popular singles.
