"Buffalo Soldier" is a reggae song written by Bob Marley and Noel "King Sporty" Williams, and recorded by the Jamaican band Bob Marley and the Wailers. Although it was not released until after Marley's death in 1983, it quickly became one of his best known songs. The song's title and lyrics pay homage to the black American cavalry regiments, known as "buffalo soldiers," who fought in the American Indian Wars in the second half of the 19th century. Marley uses this historical reference as a symbol of black resistance and the struggle for survival.
