This was his fourth studio album, recorded after a break from touring following the release of his previous album, The Man Who Sold the World. The album contains new songs written by Bowie on piano, and he assembled a new band, including guitarist Mick Ronson, bassist Trevor Bolder, and drummer Mick Woodmansey, to record it at Trident Studios in London. The album also features contributions from Rick Wakeman on piano and was co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott. Hunky Dory represents a pivotal moment in Bowie's career, as it highlights the evolution of his musical style and influences. It features some of Bowie's most iconic songs, including "Changes," "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "Life on Mars."
