Lynyrd Skynyrd - Short Biography

- Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed under the name My Backyard in 1964.
- The band went through several lineup and name changes before settling on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969.
- The band released its first album in 1973 with a lineup that included bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell and guitarist Ed King.
- Artimus Pyle replaced Bob Burns in 1974, and Steve Gaines replaced Ed King in 1976.
- At the height of their fame in the 1970s, the band popularized the southern rock genre with songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird.

- "Sweet Home Alabama" is a song by the American Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released on the band's second album, Second Helping (1974).
- It was written in response to Neil Young's song "Southern Man" (1970), which the band claimed blamed the entire South for American slavery; Young is quoted and rejected in the lyrics.
- It peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, becoming the band's highest charting single.
- The song remains a staple of Southern and classic rock, and is arguably the band's signature song.
- None of the song's three writers were from Alabama; Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington were both born in Jacksonville, Florida.
