"What Made You Say That" is the first single by Canadian singer Shania Twain. The song was written by Tony Haselden and Stan Munsey, Jr. and was originally recorded by country singer and actor Wayne Massey in 1989. Twain released her version of the song to radio in March 1993 and received some attention due to her controversial video at the time. She went on to perform the song at the 1993 Canadian Country Music Awards and also won CMT Europe's 1993 Rising Star Award. During her Come On Over tour, Shania Twain held a contest for a local child to perform the song at each show, with Twain providing backing vocals. At one of these shows, Avril Lavigne, a then-unknown Canadian pop rock singer, performed the song.
