The song was written by Michael Omartian and Summer, and produced by Omartian. The song became a hit, reaching number one on the Billboard R&B singles chart, number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and number three on the Billboard Dance Club Play chart. It earned Summer a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 1984 Grammy Awards. In addition, it was the 15th most played song of 1983 according to Billboard. Summer opened the ceremony by performing the song live.
