The song "You Oughta Know" was written by Alanis Morissette and produced by Glen Ballard. It was released as a single on August 8, 1995, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is part of the album Jagged Little Pill, which was released on June 13, 1995.

"You Oughta Know" was written as a reaction to the end of Morissette's romantic relationship with actor Dave Coulier. According to Morissette, the song is an "open letter" to Coulier. In a 2009 interview, Coulier confirmed that he was the person targeted in the song.

Morissette wrote the song in one sitting, about an hour after learning that Coulier had begun dating another woman. She initially considered not including the song on the album, but her producer convinced her to keep it.

"You Oughta Know" is a pop rock song with a moderate tempo of 104 beats per minute. The song begins with a short instrumental intro, followed by Morissette's lyrics. The song's lyrics express Morissette's anger and frustration with her ex-boyfriend.

The song was very well received by critics. AllMusic described the song as "one of the album's strongest moments." The Los Angeles Times wrote that the song was "ruthlessly honest" and "full of rage." The song was nominated for a Grammy Award and won two Juno Awards.
