- The song is classified as a psychedelic rock song, jazz rock, art rock, and a precursor to gothic music.
- It was inspired by the country song "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend", written by Stan Jones and popularized by Vaughn Monroe.
- The lyrics were written and brought to rehearsals by Morrison, part of which refers to the hitchhiker killer Billy "Cockeyed" Cook, the subject of the 1953 film, Hitch-Hiker.
- The song is scored in the key of E minor; the main keyboard riff descends through the pitches of the Dorian mode scale, and features a progression of i-IV-i7-IV.
- It is popular belief that "Riders on the Storm" is the song that the Doors' longtime producer, Paul A. Rothchild disparaged it as "cocktail music", which precipitated his departure from the L.A. Woman sessions.
